The perfect entry into smoking for a beginner!

I have wanted to get into smoking meat for a long time but was always intimidated by the process. I did not want to babysit a fire all night or constantly fiddle with vents. I finally decided to buy the Traeger Ironwood 650 as my very first smoker, and honestly, it makes me look like a professional pitmaster right out of the gate.

If you are a beginner like me and want to know if this investment is worth it, here is my breakdown of the experience.

    Construction and Build Quality

Since this was my first unit, I was not sure what to expect regarding assembly and sturdiness. The Ironwood 650 is built like a tank. The legs are thick and stable, and the lid feels heavy and substantial when you open and close it.

The standout feature here is the double side wall insulation. I read that cheaper models leak heat, but this one holds temperature incredibly well. The gasket seals tight, so smoke actually stays inside the chamber where it belongs rather than leaking out the sides. It feels like a high end appliance rather than just a backyard grill.

    Temperature Control

This was my biggest worry as a newbie. I had no idea how to manage airflow or fuel. The Ironwood 650 takes all that stress away with the D2 Direct Drive drivetrain. You literally just turn the dial to your desired temperature and hit ignite.

I watched the temperature on the digital display, and it is rock solid. If I set it to 225 degrees, it climbs there quickly and stays there. It recovers heat almost instantly after I open the lid to spritz the meat. It gives me total confidence that I am not going to ruin an expensive cut of meat by letting the heat spike or drop.

    Cooking and Flavor

The flavor profile is amazing. I was worried that a pellet grill might not give enough smoke flavor compared to traditional offsets, but the Super Smoke mode solves that. You can toggle this feature on when cooking between 165 and 225 degrees. It forces more smoke over the meat without raising the heat.

My first cook was a brisket, and the results were shocking. It had a beautiful pink smoke ring and a distinct wood fired taste. The meat remained moist and tender. The convection fan circulates the heat and smoke evenly, so I did not even have to rotate the meat during the cook.

    Capacity

Do not let the 650 number fool you. This size is perfect for a standard family. I have plenty of room for a full packer brisket and a pork butt at the same time. The grill comes with two porcelain coated racks. The bottom rack is adjustable, which is a great feature. I can lower it to fit a tall turkey or beer can chicken, or keep it higher for steaks and burgers. It strikes the perfect balance of being large enough for a party but not so massive that it takes up my whole patio.

There are two features that saved me during my first few cooks.

    1) WiFIRE Technology: Being able to connect the grill to my phone via the Traeger app is incredible. I can sit on my couch and monitor the internal temperature of the meat and the grill temp. I can even change the temperature or turn on Super Smoke from my phone. It makes the long cooks very manageable.

    2) Pellet Sensor: As a beginner, I have no idea how fast pellets burn. The built in sensor alerts my phone when the hopper is getting low. This saved me from running out of fuel during an overnight cook.

    Conclusion

I am so glad I chose the Ironwood 650 as my first smoker. It removes the learning curve and lets you focus on prepping the food and enjoying the results. The construction is solid, the temperature is precise, and the food tastes incredible. I am officially hooked on smoking.

    Wifi issues

I cannot connect my 650 ironwood the my wifi home network. I have a pro line Traeger and I have the same issue. My friend has the 885 thats 6 yrs old and the wifi never worked either from day 1. He upgraded to the new line of ironwood and the wifi works flawlessly. It's to bad Traeger didn't install the same tech in the 650 and 885 that they are installing in the new line of ironwood.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. Connectivity problems with the WiFi on certain Traeger models, like the 650 and 885, can stem from differences in the wireless modules or firmware compared to newer models like the Ironwood. Older models may have hardware or software limitations that impact network performance, while newer units use updated technology designed for more reliable connections.

We recommend checking for any available firmware updates that could improve connectivity on your current grill. If the situation persists, our support team can guide you through troubleshooting steps or explore upgrade options to enhance your experience. Please contact us at 1-800-TRAEGER for chat and phone assistance.

Cold Weather / Outdoor Use / Electronics

Recently bought the 650. Was able to use it a couple times. Really liked how things were working, but then the power brick went out right before my third time cooking. But one major thing I found after looking at the power brick is that it specifically says indoor use only on the side of the power brick in the fine details. So I’m concerned how long this grill will last before I keep having to replace power bricks since I bought the grill to solely be used outdoors like it should be. I have a covered porch and a cover for the Traeger but not sure if this will be enough to protect the electronics during cold winter months since I don’t have a garage. I also noticed in the owners manual that low ambient temperatures can cause issues for the display and controller. Not that I would operate the grill in negative temperatures but sounds like just being exposed to such temperatures can cause problems. Worried about costs adding up in the future pertaining to the electronics. Maybe someone from Traeger who has experience with these grills in cold weather can ease my mind on my purchase or provide some advice?

Hi, and thank you for your review of the Ironwood 650. Although the power brick should not be directly exposed to the elements, as long as the grill is protected, the brick will be adequately protected as well. This includes keeping the grill under the roof of a porch or by using a grill cover. As for the effect of cold weather on the display, this is referring to fairly extreme circumstances, with it only being a concern when the temperature reaches -20°F (-29°C). But even then, it is not a guarantee, and if the pixels do fade, often just power cycling the grill will be all that is needed to fix it. To do this, simply turn the power switch on (at the back of the hopper) for 30 seconds while the grill is unplugged from the outlet. However, this is really not a common issue, but is included in the documentation to provide information on all error messages, regardless of how uncommon they may be.

Thank you for your review. We are happy to hear that your Ironwood 650 has worked for the last couple of years. While you are trying to reconnect to the WI-FI, the grill will still be able to give you the same great tasting food you are used to making on your Traeger. If you have switched providers, you will need to remove the grill from your app and forget the network on your grill. Once that is done, you should be able to connect with the new network. Check our support page for information on connecting to the Wi-Fi, or call one of our agents who are always happy to help.

    5 stars

I have used it twice since purchasing it. First time was the thanksgiving turkey, came out great. Next time was chicken thighs, great flavor and juicy. I had the Silverton model before this, I do miss all the under storage that was on that model.

Overall, very happy with my purchase.

    No contest!

Word on the street is that the ironwood line is traegers strongest performing cooking platform. After owning an older model the ironwood checks off many things that are extremely practical. All I can see is well done!
